Why Are Heatless Regenerative Desiccant Dryers So Expensive?

Compressed air is often referred to as the ‘fourth utility’ purely because of how much it is used in industrial settings across a wide range of industries.

Many of these settings require a level of air quality that can only be reached by making use of a heatless regenerative desiccant dryer. But all too often, the cost of installing and operating a heatless regenerative desiccant dryer instantly puts plant managers off.

This is really unfortunate because heatless regenerative desiccant dryers come with many benefits and are ultimately as effective as they are expensive.

Today we’ll be looking at why heatless regenerative desiccant dryers are accompanied by such a high price tag when compared to other types of dryers.

Heatless Regenerative Desiccant

Heatless regenerative desiccant dryers are one of the most common types of dryers found in compressed air systems with dew point requirements of less than 35°F.

You might be surprised to hear that they’re so popular when you consider the operating cost. But this is mainly because of the reduced amount of energy that’s required.

Why Heatless Regenerative Dryers are so Expensive

Heatless desiccant regenerative dryers work by using the treated, unheated compressed air to regenerate the desiccant bed.

‘What makes this process so expensive?’ is a question we’re often asked.

When you consider how expensive compressed air is, this process is sometimes seen as a ‘waste’ of compressed air. This is purely because of the large amount of compressed air that’s consumed for the purging part of the regeneration cycle.

Up to 15% of the flow capacity is consumed as purge air!

Often you will find that a heatless regenerative dryer is the biggest user of compressed air within facilities that have a compressed air system in place.
